Downloading a lecture from MediaSite.com

> > > > > > > > UPDATE: I figured it out - skip to the end for details.

---- Start Original Post ----

I have a friend who is a doctor. He gave a lecture overseas and it was uploaded to MediaSite.com, which I've come to learn is a huge site where colleges and conferences upload lectures.

How To Download Lectures From Mediasite To Iphone

He wants to save the lecture for his own use (self critique, etc) but I haven't been able to figure that site out. It's complicated by the fact that there's a login, so I can't just post the exact URL to his lecture.

I did come across this page, which shows a demo video in the same player that the lecture uses when I log in to my friend's lecture.

Curious if anyone has any pointers on downloading a video from there.

I thought it would be easy, because I've previously worked out how to download Wistia, Vimeo, Clickfunnels, Instagram, etc by rifling through page source and locating the embedded video file, but Mediasite has left me stumped. (I'd be glad to share these howtos for any of the aforementioned sites if there is interest, but maybe it's too basic for /r/DataHoarder)

Below are a few publicly visible lectures. These play in the same player as the lecture I'm looking to download, but as I mentioned before, the one I'm interested in is behind a login so I can't post that exact link.

If you need more examples, this Google search will do it:

> > > > > > UPDATE 1: SOLVED! (with Chrome Developer Tools)

Be sure to read UPDATE 3 at the very bottom.

I found an even easier way to do this (screen recording), which works on Windows, Mac or Linux and can never be blocked even if they change the structure of the site.

How to download Mediasite.com lectures that require a login

It's late, so here's a messy short version:

  1. Open the lecture in Chrome

  2. Hit F12 or go to MORE TOOLS > DEVELOPER TOOLS and break it out into it's own window (three dots at the top right and select the leftmost icon on 'Dockside')

  3. Select NETWORK (in the tabs along the top)

  4. In the center window, along the left side, try to find something called GetPlayerOptions (it might help if you hit the 'Name' heading to sort alphabetically by name)

  5. In the window to the right of that, hit the RESPONSE tab

  6. There's a single line in there, but it is super long - COPY/PASTE this to Notepad++

  7. Do an EDIT > FIND for .mp4

  8. You will find a link that looks like this (random letters and numbers obfuscated):

9. remove this text from that URL 'manifest(format=mpd-isoff)' so you end up with this:

10. Open that URL in a new browser tab, the video will start playing the raw MP4 video file.

11. Hit CTRL+S to save

SIDE NOTE:

You might also find a link like this, which does not need to be cleaned up:

You can just paste that URL into a browser window and it'll play, do the same CTRL+S to save.

NOTE:

From my testing, this technique only seems to work on lectures that are behind a login. (like the original lecture I was trying to download.)

If you do this with the public lectures in the bullet points above, it yields a link to a .ism file, which doesn't seem to load or do anything.

How To Download Lectures From Mediasite To Computer

I only had the need to download that one lecture, but I'll poke around to see if I can figure this out for the community's sake.

> > > > > > UPDATE 2: For lectures that also have slides, I posted a comment below

See the comment here

Long story short, the slides are not a separate video feed. They are literally just a slideshow of .JPG files set to change at the appropriate time.

Because of this, the easiest way to capture a lecture together with the slides is to follow the instructions for recording your screen with video in UPDATE 3, below.

But if you just want the JPG slides, the comment has instructions on doing that.

> > > > > > UPDATE 3: Solved (by screen recording with Open Broadcaster Software)

This method is even easier --> record your screen including sound using Open Broadcaster Software - works for Windows, Mac or Linux**

Mediasite Software

Follow these instructions from HowToGeek - skip about 1/3 of the way down, past the section on using Windows 10's Game DVR.

It starts with the text 'More Powerful and Customizable: Open Broadcaster Software'

--- closing thoughts ---

I've updated this post almost constantly for the past month, hopefully bringing you guys a lot of value.

As I write this, it's June 5th - literally 1 month since my original post and I think I've learned and written as much as I can about this.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to send me a PM.
